Caring for the Area Around an Undermount Sink
Every undermount sink creates a seam where stone, sink, water, and vibration meet — it's the hardest-working spot in the kitchen. Minerals build up on the exposed rim, dishwater sits against the sealant, and years of disposal vibration work on the mounting underneath. It deserves two minutes of attention a week.
Wipe the rim dry after dishes, break down hard-water haze with a brief vinegar-water wipe, and check for two warning signs: a visible gap opening between sink rim and stone, or a new rattle when the disposal runs. Both mean the mounting is failing — that's the repair we get the most calls about, and catching it early means a clean re-anchor before the sink falls, chips the stone, or damages plumbing.
Do
- Dry the sink rim after use to slow mineral build-up
- Check for rim gaps and disposal rattles monthly
- Re-anchor a failing sink mount early — it's a small job then
Don’t
- Don't let cleaning products pool at the rim overnight
- Don't hang heavy items off the sink or faucet
- Don't ignore a drooping sink — it only gets worse
