Do Quartz Countertops Need Sealing? (No — Here's Why)
This is the biggest quartz myth of all: natural stone like granite and marble is porous and needs periodic sealing, but quartz is engineered with resin that binds the mineral into a non-porous surface. There is nothing to seal. Anyone selling you a 'quartz sealing service' is selling you nothing.
The one caveat: if your quartz seems to be darkening around spills or absorbing stains, the factory surface has been compromised — usually by harsh cleaners, years of acidic abuse, or a bad resurfacing job. That's a refinishing question, not a sealing one. And if you're choosing counters and hate maintenance, this is exactly why quartz wins: zero sealing, ever, even in Florida humidity.
Do
- Skip sealing entirely — it's unnecessary on quartz
- Watch for stain-absorption as a sign of surface wear
- Choose quartz if you want the lowest-maintenance stone
Don’t
- Don't pay for quartz 'sealing services'
- Don't use 2-in-1 stone cleaners with sealers
- Don't confuse etch marks on marble with quartz behavior
