Removing Scratches from Quartz Countertops
Quartz is hard, but it's not scratch-proof. Most scratches come from one habit: sliding ceramic bowls, cast iron, or appliances across the surface, or using the countertop as a cutting board. Fine scuffs often show up under kitchen lights before you can feel them with a fingernail.
If a scratch catches your fingernail, it's below the surface and home kits won't reliably fix it — resurfacing is done by regrinding and re-polishing the stone in place. If it doesn't catch, a gentle polishing compound designed for stone may lift the haze. Never use sandpaper, magic erasers, or scouring powder: they create micro-scratches that make the whole area look dull.
Do
- Find the cause — cutting boards and trivets stop new scratches
- Try a stone-safe polishing compound on light scuffs
- Get deep gouges professionally resurfaced before they stain
Don’t
- Don't use sandpaper or scouring powder on quartz
- Don't slide cast iron or ceramic across the surface
- Don't wax quartz — it attracts dirt and dulls the finish
