Quartz vs Granite: Which Is Easier to Maintain?
Both are premium surfaces, and both last decades — the maintenance gap is what separates them day to day. Granite is porous natural stone: it needs sealing every year or two, absorbs oils and wine if sealing lapses, and acid (citrus, vinegar, wine) etches a dull mark into the polish. Quartz's resin makes it non-porous: no sealing ever, and acid only matters if it's left sitting.
The honest trade-off: granite tolerates a hot pan better, and no two slabs are alike — natural movement engineered stone imitates but doesn't fully match. If zero-maintenance is the priority — busy families, rentals, humid climates — quartz wins on care, full stop. Still torn between two specific slabs? We fabricate and repair both, so we'll tell you the truth about each one you're considering.
Do
- Choose quartz if maintenance is the deciding factor
- Seal granite annually if you do own it
- Ask us for an honest comparison of your actual shortlist
Don’t
- Don't seal quartz — the 'easier one' is already the easy one
- Don't put hot pans on either surface out of habit
- Don't buy 'universal' stone cleaners without reading for quartz safety
